  • Open source enjoys a twenty-plus-year history and now spans every industry. Nevertheless, many organizations may not fully appreciate how much they rely on, or the potential of, open source software. Open source was initially met with optimism and promoted within education–perhaps even promising a bit too much. After twenty years, was open source software a passing fad? Is it now mainstream? Either view–fad or mainstream–can lead some to overlook open source’s current value and opportunities beyond technology for today’s campuses, researchers, faculty, and learners. If it was a fad, there is no need to consider open source software options for current uses on campus; better options exist. If it is now mainstream, there is nothing more for campuses to do; open source is operational. Reality is somewhere in between. Open source software today, while growing faster and impacting broader and more diverse communities on campuses than ever, remains underappreciated and underutilized. This presentation will highlight current adoption and extended opportunities beyond technology–teaching and learning, research, access and equity–to implement open source software and collaborate with the communities that create it.
